The north gate drops you into a neighbourhood of imperial parks, glittering lakes, hutong lanes and tea houses — most within a 15-minute walk. Here is how to turn your palace visit into a perfect Beijing day.

Jingshan Park — the mandatory panorama (5 minutes from the gate)

Directly across from the Gate of Divine Prowess, Jingshan Park is the hill the palace was aligned to, and its five pavilions crown an artificial ridge built from the earth dug out for the palace moat. Climb the central pavilion (10 minutes, 2 CNY entry) and you get the postcard view of the Forbidden City: a sea of golden roofs marching south under the skyline. Go 1–2 hours before sunset for golden light, or mid-morning for the clearest air.

Beihai Park — emperors’ playground (15 minutes west)

One of China’s oldest imperial gardens wraps a glittering lake around the white Dagoba on Jade Flower Island. Paddle a boat in summer, admire the Nine-Dragon Glazed Wall, or simply walk the lakeshore where Qing emperors once cooled off. Combined with Jingshan it makes an effortless afternoon.

Tiananmen Square & the National Museum (south of the entrance)

Before you enter the palace, you will walk through the world’s largest public square. Arrive early for the flag-raising ceremony if you can, and consider the National Museum of China on the east side — its ancient-bronze galleries pair beautifully with a palace morning.

Hutongs: Nanluoguxiang & Wudaoying

East of Jingshan, the grey-walled hutong lanes are where old Beijing still breathes. Nanluoguxiang buzzes with snack stalls and craft shops; quieter Wudaoying hides indie coffee roasters and courtyard restaurants. A rickshaw tour costs little and saves your feet.

Qianmen & Dashilar (20 minutes south)

The restored Qianmen street south of Tiananmen is a century-old shopping avenue where you can try Peking duck in a courtyard restaurant or ride the vintage tram down Dashilar. It pairs perfectly with an afternoon palace exit via the south side.

A perfect one-day plan

08:30 Enter the Palace Museum at opening (Route 2 from our routes guide).

13:00 Exit north, lunch in a Wudaoying hutong courtyard.

14:30 Jingshan Park panorama, then Beihai Park lakeside.

17:30 Back to Jingshan for the sunset view over golden roofs.

19:00 Peking duck dinner near Qianmen.

Practical tips: the north and south areas are connected by metro Line 1 (Tiananmen East) and Line 6 (Nanluoguxiang); taxis are inexpensive.
