Highlights Worth Your Time

Hall of Supreme Harmony seen across its white marble terrace

The Three Great Halls

Supreme Harmony, Central Harmony and Preserving Harmony rise on a three-tier marble terrace along the central axis. The Hall of Supreme Harmony is the largest surviving wooden hall in China — the throne room where ceremonies shaped the empire.

Hall of Mental Cultivation throne interior with calligraphy panels

Hall of Mental Cultivation

From 1723 the emperors lived and ruled here. See the throne, the study, and the chamber frozen in Qing-dynasty detail — the room behind the drama Story of Yanxi Palace fans know so well.

Wall of antique European clocks in the Palace Museum clock gallery

Clock & Watch Exhibition

Gilded automatons, elephant-drawn carriages and musical clocks gifted by European courts — still running after three centuries. A hit with kids and photographers alike.

Pavilion of Ten Thousand Springs in the Imperial Garden

Imperial Garden

The emperors’ private retreat at the north end: ancient cypresses, rockeries and the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Springs. Best enjoyed slowly, in the last hour of your visit.

The Corner Tower reflected in the palace moat at dusk

The Corner Tower & Moat

After you exit north, walk the moat to see the 72-ridged Corner Tower reflected in the water — sunrise and dusk are magic, and Jingshan Park opposite gives the classic rooftop panorama.

Insider tips

Tips From Millions of Travelers

Book 7 days ahead

Tickets are released exactly 7 days in advance at 20:00 Beijing time and weekends sell out within minutes.

Arrive at 8:30

The first hour is the quietest — empty courtyards, soft light and short security lines.

Passport is mandatory

Real-name entry: bring the physical passport used for booking, not a photo of it.

Comfortable shoes & water

You will walk 4–6 km on marble. Bring a 500 ml bottle; toilets and water points are plentiful inside.

No re-entry

Once you exit (north or east gate) your ticket is used. Plan lunch and breaks before leaving.

Skip big bags

Large luggage is not allowed past security — a free storage counter operates near the entrance.

A guide pays off

Travelers consistently say a guide turns courtyards into stories. Small-group tours start around US$10–15.

Finish at Jingshan

Climb the hill opposite the north gate for the full golden-roof panorama — sunset is unforgettable.
